University of Kent - 4
Old Bordenian - 1
The Old Boys' 5th X1 were reminded what losing felt like as their 8 game winning streak came to an end against a strong, young University of Kent team. The visitors started well in blustery conditions on a bouncy pitch, winning several short corners and retaining a lot of possession. Late on in the first half a good move resulted in Paul Gower smashing in for the game’s opening goal. Solid defending, especially from Matthew Cooke at right back, kept the score at one nil going into half time.
The Old Boys started the second half looking to keep the home team out and managed to do this for ten minutes or so but were unlucky to concede two goals in quick succession, one from the spot. The momentum shifted to the University team and their 16 man squad meant that rotation kept their players fresher than a visiting bare eleven. In need of goals, the Old Boys swarmed forward, with excellent attacking play from Paul Hood and Matt Hopkins in midfield. But this left the defence wide open and the home team were able to get another two goals. The Bordenian team had several late chances but were unlucky to take nothing away from the game, with the score flattering the home team some what.
