Old Bordenian 5th X1 – 3

Ashford Vets – 1

The Old Bordenian 5th X1 entertained the Ashford Veterans in this friendly fixture. The home team began the game without their stranded Vice Captain James Anderson, who also happens to be their 'keeper. This however spurred them on to play some attacking hockey from the offset, winning some early short corners and maintaining the early possession. Still without a goalkeeper and midway through the first half, Paul Gower, at the second time of asking, smashed into the open goal, a fantastic strike with a brand new stick still in the wrapping.

The lead did not last long though as the lack of 'keeper caught up with the defence, and Dave Crombie took the term  ‘kicking back’ slightly too literally and Ashford were awarded a penalty goal. The Old Boys were up to full strength in the second half and this gave them the confidence to attack in numbers and a brilliant breakaway goal resulted in Paul Young converting. Sustained pressure from the Old Boys resulted in a third late on with Paul Gower getting his second by deflecting a Craig Williams shot to round off a good team performance. The Old Boys return to league action this week.
