Old Bordenian 4B X1 - 3
Wellcome Unicorns - 1
This top of the table fixture was a clash of styles as the youthful Old Bordenian side tried to play flowing hockey against a more senior Wellcome side adopting more functional, physical approach.
The first half was largely dominated by the Bordenians and the opposition keeper was regularly called into action, with Rory Bollard coming close on several occasions. Wellcome were restricted to counter-attacks, particularly through a speedy left winger but he was repulsed by the experienced Steve Willis.
In the second half, Wellcome came out much more determined to assert themselves on the slighter Bordenian players, and for a significant period forced the home side back into their half. The Bordenians' greater skill could not however be subdued and they were rewarded with a penalty stroke when a defender blocked the ball with his body on the line. Neil Willis duly converted. Now with greater space, Bordenians ran in two more goals with Matt Blades scoring both, and, although the away side gained a consolation goal at the final whistle, this did not deny the home team a worthy win to leave them clear at the top of the table.
