Old Bordenian 3rdXI – 3
Gillingham Anchorians 2nd XI
- 3
Keen to avenge the defeat earlier in the season, OBs went over to Gillingham
determined to get a win. The first half was an even affair, with both 'keepers
having to be at their best in defending their goal. At half time Bordenians just
shaved the honours by virtue of a neat deflection from Alderson to give them the
lead.
Anchs started the second half strongly, aided by some sloppy passing from the
Maroons. They duly got their reward from a short corner but parity was not to
last long. Old Bordenians were awarded a penalty corner. Invoking one of the
routines the side has been working on, the ball was moved to Thompson whose
persistence finally saw him force the ball over the line. The half continued
with the 'Bourne side effectively in control. This control was reinforced when
Hailwood broke up a potential overload situation. The ball was moved quickly up
to Moore who, aided by a great run from Steve Dale to draw defenders away,
rounded the 'keeper to increase the lead. With ten minutes to go, it looked like
it was all over bar the shouting until two sloppy bits of defending let in a
relieved Anchs. A poor result from a game that should have been tied up much
sooner. Indeed, if the Bordenian forwards had put away half the chances they
had, the three goals Anchs scored would have been irrelevant.
