Old Bordenians 2nd X1 – 3
Old Williamsonians -1
The Old Boys picked up their first home win of the campaign despite falling behind to a penalty stroke early in the first half. Yet again, the home side had to absorb changes, with a new forward duo of David Wherrell and Ivan Seka promising additional pace to the side. These changes seemed to affect the home side negatively in the initial 20 minutes as the Old Boys struggled to cope with the pressure exerted on their defence by the enthusiastic visitors. Importantly, another of the changes, 'keeper Neil Ranger, dealt with this pressure decisively making two point blank saves and played superbly throughout.
The Old Boys then began to find their touch and worked harder to dictate the play with Wherrell and Rob Lamb gaining more possession in midfield. Ten minutes before the break, the Old Boys got their reward for a series of flowing moves when a fluent exchange of passes between Ranjit Atwal, Dave Elgar, & Jez Scholfield led to a clinical finish from Matt Roche. This encouraged the Old Boys and they finished the half on a high with Rob Sage twice coming close from a succession of short corners.
After the break, the Old Boys executed plans of acting manager Andy Bond and upped the pace of their attacks, with Atwal and Mason Shoebridge finding space to support along the flanks. Ricky Archer was also making an impact up front and his subtle touch from a Wherrell through ball found its way under the 'keeper and it was helped into the net by serial goal-poacher Scholfield. This spurred on the home side and they were further rewarded when Lamb’s shot from the edge of the D evaded the visiting 'keeper’s desperate lunge. The visitors pushed forward but Ranger was equal to their challenge, as well as that of his own team-mates as Wherrell and Shoebridge tested his vigilance with some misguided back passes.
The Old Boys 2nds travel to Folkestone for next Saturday’s fixture.
