Old Bordenian 2nd XI – 3

Worthing – 1

Old Bordenian 2nds gained a valuable 3 points in their second league game. With a reduced squad and an unfamiliar surface, the Old Boys knew that their start was crucial and they produced a focused performance in the first half with 'keeper Andy Bond rarely called into any action. The Old Boys’ work rate was crucial as they imposed more pressure on the home side, with new forward partnership Matt Blades and Ricky Dale gaining the result their efforts deserved when a defensive mistake let Blades in on goal after 15 minutes and he finished emphatically. For the remainder of the first period, the work of Ranjit Atwal, Dave Hailwood and Mason Shoebridge in defence denied Worthing any comeback, and quickly after the restart, the Old Boys doubled their lead. After good work by Rob Lamb and Rob Sage in midfield, Jez Scholfield finished with an unconventional reverse stick volley.

The home side pushed hard after this and midway through the second half, Bond had no chance with a well deflected shot. The Old Boys continued to retain most of the possession, however, and sealed the points when good work by Lamb and Dale led to a penalty stroke which was converted in style by Scholfield. There was just time left for a superb goal-line clearance from Hailwood, and the Old Boys saw time out in relative comfort.

Old Bordenian 2nds are at home to Canterbury 4A next week.
